PNG metadata remover

PNG stores metadata in named chunks rather than the segment structure JPEG uses, and the text chunks are where AI tools put the most revealing material.

Stable Diffusion writes your full generation parameters here. ComfyUI writes the entire node graph. Both are plain readable text.

How PNG stores metadata

A PNG is a signature followed by a list of chunks. Each chunk carries a length, a four character type, its data and a CRC. Critical chunks spell the image itself; ancillary chunks carry everything else.

Because each surviving chunk keeps its own CRC, deleting a whole chunk needs no checksum recalculation. That is why PNG cleaning can be genuinely lossless: the IDAT bytes holding your picture are copied untouched.

Why PNG specifically

PNG leaks more than JPEG does

A JPEG from a camera carries settings and location. A PNG from an AI pipeline often carries the method: the prompt, the negative prompt, the sampler, the CFG scale, the seed, the model name and hash, and in ComfyUI's case an importable workflow.

Anyone can read it by opening the file in a text editor. No tooling required.

Converting to JPEG is not the answer

It does drop the chunks, but it also recompresses your image and discards transparency. Removing the chunks keeps the PNG exactly as it was.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

›How do I remove metadata from a PNG?

Drop the file into the tool above. Every tEXt, zTXt, iTXt, eXIf and caBX chunk is removed, leaving IHDR, IDAT and IEND. The compressed image data is copied rather than re-encoded.

›Does removing PNG chunks reduce quality?

No. PNG is lossless to begin with, and we do not re-encode. The IDAT bytes come out identical, which the verifier confirms on every run.

›Why did my PNG get smaller?

Because the text chunks were genuinely large. A ComfyUI workflow can be tens of kilobytes. Tools that decode and re-save often produce a larger file instead.

›Can you show me what is in the compressed chunks?

Not yet. zTXt and iTXt are removed correctly, but we do not currently inflate them to display their contents. Plain tEXt chunks are shown in full.
