Remove GPS location data from a photo
Phone photos record where you were to within a few metres, stored as latitude and longitude in the EXIF GPS directory, often with altitude and compass bearing.
Publish the file untouched and the coordinates travel with it, through every repost and download.
- Latitude, longitude, altitude
- Also clears device serial
- Lossless

What is recorded
What your camera stores about location
- GPSLatitude / GPSLongitude
- Degrees, minutes and seconds as rational numbers, plus a reference letter for hemisphere. Precise enough to identify a single building.
- GPSAltitude
- Height above sea level, which can distinguish a floor in a building.
- GPSImgDirection
- The compass bearing the camera faced, so the subject can be located as well as the photographer.
- GPSTimeStamp
- UTC time of the fix, independent of your device clock and timezone.
Use the Everything mode
GPS lives inside the EXIF block. The AI markers only mode deliberately preserves EXIF for photographers, which means it preserves GPS too. For privacy, choose Everything.
Who needs it
When location data genuinely matters
- Selling something online. Marketplace photos are shot at home, and the coordinates point at your front door.
- Pseudonymous accounts. Location plus a camera serial number links posts to a person and a place.
- Photos of children. School gates, parks and home addresses embedded in a shared album.
- Journalism and activism. Coordinates can identify a source, a safe house or a meeting point.
- Property listings. Interior shots of a house you do not live in still carry the address you took them at.
Good to know
Things people get wrong about GPS removal
- Most social platforms strip EXIF after processing, but not all services do, and anyone you send the original file to gets everything.
- Screenshotting removes GPS but costs resolution and adds your device profile. Stripping is lossless.
- Turning off location in your camera app stops new photos recording it. It does nothing for photos you already have.
- Cropping or resizing in most editors preserves EXIF, including GPS. Editing is not cleaning.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
›How do I remove GPS data from a photo?
Drop it into the tool above with the mode set to Everything. The EXIF block holding your coordinates is removed, and the picture itself is copied without re-encoding.
›Can I remove only GPS and keep my camera settings?
Not as a single switch today, because GPS and exposure settings live in the same EXIF block. Everything removes both; AI markers only keeps both. A GPS-only option is a fair thing to want and is on the list.
›Does Instagram remove GPS automatically?
Most large platforms strip EXIF during processing, so the published copy usually has no coordinates. That does not protect the original file if you also email it, share it in a message, or upload it somewhere that does not strip.
›Will removing GPS change my photo?
No. The coordinates sit in a container block beside the compressed picture, so removing them is a copy operation. The pixels are byte for byte identical afterwards.
