C2PA remover

C2PA is a cryptographically signed manifest describing how a file was made and edited. OpenAI, Adobe, Google, Microsoft and a growing list of camera makers write it.

Of everything in an image file, this is the marker platforms read most reliably, which makes it the usual cause of an AI label.

What to remove

Where it lives

How a manifest is embedded

In JPEG the manifest sits in an APP11 segment inside a JUMBF box. In PNG it is a caBX chunk. Either way it is a self contained block beside the image, so removing it does not touch the picture.

A manifest records a claim generator, a list of actions such as c2pa.created or c2pa.edited, timestamps, and a signature chain. It is designed to be tamper evident: altering it breaks the signature. Removing it entirely simply leaves a file with no provenance, which is the state most images on the internet are already in.

Honest limits

What we do not do yet

  • We detect that a manifest is present and remove it. We do not currently verify its signature or show you who signed it.
  • We do not display the action list, the claim generator, or the certificate chain. Those are worth surfacing and are planned.
  • If you need to verify rather than remove, use the Content Credentials verify tool linked in the sources below.

Removing a manifest is not forging one

Stripping provenance leaves a file making no claims. That is different from altering a manifest to say something false, which breaks the signature and is a meaningfully different act.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

›What is C2PA?

The Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity standard: a signed record of how a file was created and edited, embedded in the image. Adobe markets it as Content Credentials.

›Why does C2PA cause AI labels?

Because it is machine readable, signed and unambiguous. Platforms can trust it in a way they cannot trust a free text field, so it is the marker they act on most consistently.

›Does removing C2PA break the image?

No. The manifest is a separate block. Removing it leaves a perfectly valid file with no provenance information, which is how the vast majority of images already exist.

›Can you check whether a C2PA signature is valid?

Not yet. We detect and remove manifests but do not verify signatures. We would rather say so than imply a verification we do not perform.
