WebP metadata remover
WebP is a RIFF container. Metadata lives in named chunks alongside the image data, and removing them takes two fix ups that most tools skip.
Get those wrong and the cleaned file is subtly broken, even though it still opens in some viewers.
- RIFF chunk surgery
- Fixes VP8X flags
- Stays WebP

The tricky part
Two things that must be corrected
- 1
The RIFF size field
The container header records its own total size. Remove a chunk without updating it and the file claims to be longer than it is, which strict decoders reject.
- 2
The VP8X feature flags
The extended header advertises which optional features the file uses, including whether EXIF, XMP and ICC data are present. Removing the chunks without clearing the matching bits leaves the file announcing data that is no longer there.
Both are handled here. It is the kind of detail that only shows up when a file fails somewhere downstream, long after you thought it was clean.
Format notes
What gets removed and what stays
| Chunk | Contents | Removed |
|---|---|---|
EXIF | Camera data and GPS | Yes |
XMP | Generation tags and source type | Yes |
ICCP | Colour profile | Only if you ask |
VP8 , VP8L, ALPH | The image and its alpha | Never |
ANIM, ANMF | Animation frames | Never |
The file stays WebP
Some tools convert WebP to PNG or JPEG rather than parsing the container. That changes your format, your file size and, for lossy WebP, your pixels. We would rather do the parsing.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
›Can WebP files contain EXIF and GPS?
Yes. WebP supports EXIF, XMP and ICC chunks, so a WebP exported from a phone or an editor can carry the same camera data and coordinates a JPEG would.
›Will the cleaned WebP still open everywhere?
Yes, because we correct the RIFF size field and the VP8X feature flags after removal. Skipping those fix ups is what produces files that open in one viewer and fail in another.
›Does cleaning change lossy WebP quality?
No. The VP8 payload is copied rather than decoded, so a lossy WebP is not recompressed.
›What about animated WebP?
Animation chunks are preserved. Only the metadata chunks are removed.
