EXIF remover

EXIF is the block your camera or phone writes: make, model, lens, exposure, the exact moment of capture, the body serial number, and on a phone the GPS coordinates.

It is the oldest and most consequential metadata in an image, and the reason EXIF removers existed long before AI labels did.

Structure

Why EXIF is more than one list

EXIF is built on TIFF. The main directory holds general fields, and pointers lead to a camera specific directory and a separate GPS directory. A parser that reads only the first directory never sees your coordinates, which is one way checkers report a file as clean when it is not.

IFD0
Make, model, orientation, software, artist, copyright and the modification date.
Exif IFD
Exposure, aperture, ISO, lens model, body serial number and the original capture time.
GPS IFD
Latitude, longitude, altitude, bearing and the GPS timestamp.

The AI angle

The Software field gets photos labelled

The EXIF Software field records what last wrote the file. When that reads "Adobe Photoshop 25.0 (Generative Fill)", an automated check can treat a genuine photograph as AI involved.

This is the single most common false positive in the whole category, and it is why the AI markers only mode exists: it removes EXIF when the EXIF itself names an AI tool, and keeps it when it does not.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

›What is EXIF data?

Exchangeable Image File Format: the block of camera and device information embedded in a photo. Make, model, lens, exposure settings, timestamps, serial number and, on phones, GPS coordinates.

›Should I always remove EXIF?

Not always. Photographers often want exposure settings and copyright preserved. Remove it when you are publishing and privacy matters, or when the Software field names an AI editor.

›Does removing EXIF delete my copyright?

In Everything mode, yes, because copyright lives in the same block. Use AI markers only to keep creator and copyright while removing generator fingerprints.

›Can EXIF identify me?

The body serial number links every photo from that camera together. Combined with GPS and timestamps it is a strong identifier, particularly across a pseudonymous account.
