Copyright and creator metadata
Images carry embedded rights information: a creator name, a credit line, a copyright notice and sometimes full usage terms, stored across IPTC and XMP.
Sometimes you want it gone. More often, you want to make sure it survives. This page covers both directions.
- IPTC and XMP rights
- Keep or remove

Both directions
Removing it, and protecting it
If you are publishing your own work and want no personal details attached, Everything removes the rights fields along with everything else. If you are delivering client work where embedded attribution is part of the licence, AI markers only keeps creator and copyright intact while still removing generator fingerprints.
Removing someone else's copyright information
Stripping rights metadata from your own files is routine. Deliberately removing a copyright notice from someone else's work to obscure ownership is a different act, and in several jurisdictions, including under the US DMCA section 1202, it carries its own liability. This tool does not police what you load, and that line is worth knowing.
Where it lives
Which fields carry rights
- EXIF Artist and Copyright
- Simple text fields in the main EXIF directory, written by most cameras when configured.
- IPTC creator, credit, rights
- The publishing standard used across news and stock, stored in an APP13 block in JPEG.
- XMP dc:creator and dc:rights
- Dublin Core fields inside the XMP block, the version most editors read and write today.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
›How do I remove copyright metadata from an image?
Use Everything mode, which removes EXIF, IPTC and XMP rights fields along with the rest of the metadata.
›How do I keep my copyright while removing AI markers?
Use AI markers only. Creator, credit and copyright are preserved, while C2PA, XMP generation tags and AI fingerprinted EXIF are removed.
›Does removing metadata affect who owns the image?
No. Copyright arises from authorship, not from a field in a file. Removing the notice does not transfer anything, though it can make provenance harder to demonstrate.
›Is it legal to remove copyright metadata?
From your own files, ordinarily yes. Removing it from someone else's work to conceal ownership is a different matter and can carry specific liability. This is not legal advice.
