Remove ComfyUI workflow metadata
ComfyUI embeds your entire node graph as JSON in every PNG it saves. That is not a summary of settings, it is the whole workflow, importable by anyone who drags your image into their own ComfyUI.
If your workflow is the thing you spent weeks building, publishing the PNG publishes the workflow.

What is in the file
What ComfyUI writes into your image
| Field | Contents |
|---|---|
| workflow | The complete node graph as JSON, including positions |
| prompt | The resolved API-format prompt graph |
| Node parameters | Every sampler, seed, model and conditioning value |
| Custom node names | Which extensions your setup depends on |
What it reveals
What someone with your file can learn
- Your full workflow, drag-and-drop importable by anyone
- Every model, LoRA, VAE and custom node you use, by name
- All seeds and sampler settings
- The structure of techniques you may consider proprietary
Worth knowing
ComfyUI workflow notes
- Dragging a ComfyUI PNG into ComfyUI loads the workflow, that is a feature, and exactly why published files leak so much.
- Keep your originals. Once the workflow chunk is stripped you cannot re-import that graph from the image, so strip the copies you publish, not your archive.
- The workflow JSON can be large, so ComfyUI PNGs often shrink noticeably more than other files when cleaned.
Questions
ComfyUI metadata FAQ
›Does my ComfyUI image really contain my whole workflow?
Yes. ComfyUI writes the node graph as JSON into a PNG text chunk so that dragging the image back into ComfyUI restores the workflow. Anyone you send the file to can do the same.
›Will stripping the metadata break my ability to reload the workflow?
For that copy, yes, which is why you should strip the files you publish and keep your originals. The image itself is unaffected; only the embedded graph is removed.
›Why did my ComfyUI PNG shrink so much after cleaning?
Because the workflow JSON is genuinely large, often tens of kilobytes. Unlike tools that re-encode and end up larger, removing the chunk reduces the file while leaving the image data identical.
