Remove Generative Fill markers from a real photograph
This is the most common false positive in the whole category. You photographed something real, used Generative Fill to extend a background or remove a distraction, and Photoshop wrote content credentials saying an AI tool was involved.
Platforms then label a genuine photograph as AI. The marker is accurate about the edit and misleading about the image.

What is in the file
What Photoshop Generative Fill writes into your image
| Field | Contents |
|---|---|
| C2PA manifest | Adobe-signed claim recording the AI-assisted action |
| c2pa.actions | Often c2pa.edited with a generative action listed |
| EXIF Software | Adobe Photoshop, sometimes naming the AI feature |
| XMP history | Edit steps recorded in the Adobe history block |
What it reveals
What someone with your file can learn
- That an AI-assisted edit occurred, with no indication of how small it was
- Your full Photoshop edit history in some export paths
- Original camera EXIF, including GPS, if you did not strip it separately
Worth knowing
Photoshop Generative Fill workflow notes
- Use AI markers only here. It strips the C2PA and AI-fingerprinted fields while keeping your shutter speed, lens and copyright, which is usually what a photographer wants.
- Remember that AI-only mode keeps GPS, because GPS lives in the EXIF block. If the shoot location is sensitive, use Everything instead.
- “Save As” and “Export As” embed different amounts of provenance. If one route keeps producing labels, test the other on a sample.
- Content Credentials can be toggled in Photoshop preferences, which prevents the marker at source rather than removing it afterwards.
Questions
Photoshop Generative Fill metadata FAQ
›Why is my real photo labelled as AI after using Generative Fill?
Because Photoshop writes a C2PA manifest recording that a generative tool touched the file. Platforms read that manifest and apply a label. They are reading the edit history accurately; the label just implies more than the edit did.
›Can I remove the AI marker but keep my camera data?
Yes: that is what AI-markers-only mode is for. It removes the C2PA manifest and any AI-fingerprinted fields while preserving camera settings, creator and copyright. Note it also keeps GPS.
›Can I stop Photoshop adding credentials in the first place?
Content Credentials are a preference in recent Photoshop versions, so you can disable attachment at export. That prevents the marker rather than removing it later, which is less work across a whole shoot.
