Remove Adobe Firefly content credentials
Firefly is the most thoroughly marked generator of the major tools. Adobe attaches a signed C2PA manifest and an IPTC DigitalSourceType of trainedAlgorithmicMedia, a machine-readable declaration in two separate places.
Tools that check only one container will miss the other and tell you the file is clean.
writes to: C2PA + IPTC

What is in the file
What Adobe Firefly writes into your image
| Field | Contents |
|---|---|
| C2PA manifest | Adobe-signed content credentials |
| IPTC DigitalSourceType | trainedAlgorithmicMedia |
| XMP creatorTool | Adobe Firefly with version |
| c2pa.actions | c2pa.created, naming the generative model |
What it reveals
What someone with your file can learn
- Two independent declarations of AI generation
- The Firefly model version used
- Adobe account linkage in some export routes
Worth knowing
Adobe Firefly workflow notes
- Because Firefly marks in two places, a file can show as clean in a C2PA-only checker while still carrying the IPTC tag. The tool above reads both.
- Firefly output routed through Express or Photoshop can accumulate additional provenance rather than replacing it.
- Adobe treats content credentials as a feature, so expect marking to become more thorough rather than less.
Questions
Adobe Firefly metadata FAQ
›Why do some checkers say my Firefly image is clean?
Because many only look for C2PA. Firefly also writes an IPTC DigitalSourceType into XMP, which a C2PA-only checker never sees. We audited one popular tool that missed exactly this, and reported files with AI tags as having zero metadata.
›What is trainedAlgorithmicMedia?
An IPTC standard value meaning the content was created by an algorithm trained on data, in other words, a formal machine-readable statement that the image is AI-generated. Platforms can read it directly without parsing a C2PA manifest.
›Does removing Firefly credentials affect commercial use rights?
Your licence to use Firefly output comes from Adobe’s terms, not from the metadata, so stripping it does not change your rights. It also does not remove any disclosure duty that applies to how you publish the image.
